The Nation magazine did post on line last fall an article on Republican vote suppression in the November elections. We know there were many new laws put in place with the purported aim of preventing so-called voter fraud, but which were really intended primarily to suppress the Democratic vote. How do we know it? We know this, first, because of the extreme rarity of voter fraud (a voter attempting to vote in the name of a dead person, for example -- or voting in two different states). Second, it is primarily those of color and the elderly or the young who do not possess required forms of identification. The referenced article gives mostly anecdotal evidence, but the stories do give an important clue that all was not right with the election last fall -- to say the least.
